Food in Ancient Egypt: A Culinary Journey via Zoom Online
As the holiday season approaches, questions arise: What did the ancient Egyptians eat and drink? What comprised a typical ancient dinner? Did they have beer? Wine? Pizza Hut?
Join Dr. Steve from the Penn Museum for a highly-illustrated Zoom introduction on the diet of the ancient Egyptians–what we know, and how we know it. Many of Egypt's food choices eventually became part of the Mediterranean world of ancient Greece and ancient Rome. Physical data gathered from archaeology, along with images derived from tomb walls, provide us with a rich picture of just how diverse the ancient Egyptian diet actually was.
Dr. Stephen R. Phillips is the Curatorial Research Coordinator in the Egyptian Section of the Penn Museum and a lecturer in the museum’s Learning Programs Department. Dr. Phillips earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in the fields of biological anthropology, archaeology, and Egyptology, all from the University of Pennsylvania. He specializes in the analysis of ancient Egyptian and modern human skeletal remains, mummies and mummification techniques, all to reveal what it was like to be an ancient Egyptian.
